LIMMUD NZ 2013…Ready, Set and Launched!

LIMMUD NZ 2013 was launched on Saturday night at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre with more than a hundred people, programme highlights and plenty of mulled wine! Gavin Beinart-Smollan (Jewish Learning Conference Class of ’07) and Roger Reynolds (LIMMUD NZ Class of ’13) each spoke about what LIMMUD NZ means to them: Gavin on his journey from studying in Israel to finding that Jewish learning could take place within the New Zealand community in a diverse, deep and inspiring way. (Gavin is now living in Israel but misses LIMMUD NZ and promises to be back on the programme one day!). Roger spoke about how he first encountered LIMMUD in its original home, the UK, and how pleased he was when it reached NZ.

We then “met’ some of the presenters for LIMMUD NZ 2013 – with local stand-ins for our visitors from the UK, Australia and Israel – the real ones will be here in August – plus glimpses of local talent.

Gavin and Roger have their own reasons for being part of LIMMUD NZ – yours may be different. But whether you are looking for text study or yoga, study or singing, culture or conversation – LIMMUD NZ 2013 has something for you.

Dr Ruth Calderon confirmed for LIMMUD NZ 2013 – register now!

We are incredibly excited to be able to announce that Dr Ruth Calderon, MK, is going to be presenting at LIMMUD NZ 2013!
Ruth Calderon is an Israeli academic (with a PhD in Talmud)-turned- politician. Until recently she was best-known as the founder of ALMA, the “Secular Yeshiva” which seeks to make Jewish culture & Torah learning available to secular Israelis.  After her election to the Knesset in 2013 for the Yesh Atid party, she turned her maiden speech – complete with Talmud lesson – into a YouTube sensation with over 150,000 hits.  Its focus on the need for mutual understanding and respect between the different (and often opposing) sectors of Israeli society has hit a chord both within Israel and outside it. View the version with English subtitles below:

Don’t miss Ruth Calderon at LIMMUD NZ 2013 – she is here for Saturday 10 August only
Dr Ruth Calderon is being brought to New Zealand with the support of the Raye Freedman Trust.

Take it from people who were at Limmud last year

“We loved being in the land of the long white cloud.. and being at Limmud was like being immersed deeply in the land of learning.

For a weekend , the world outside receded and we revelled in such a rich and diverse programme which was also distinguished by its heimish feel.
We loved the idea of the communal eating and the breaks between sessions which allowed for intermingling  and more conversations and as outsiders from OZ we felt very welcomed.
A particular highlight was the havadalah service and the involvement of youth groups, which really reinforced the  a senses of total community engagement.
The committee is to be commended for delivering a world class festival that was scholarly,  accessible and entertaining.
We have told our friends it’s a must do and we’ll be back.”
